International Talk Like a Pirate Day at Barbukka
September 21st 2006 08:20
September 19th was International Talk like a Pirate Day.
The good people at Chats 'n' Poems at Barbukka put on a stellar cast of Piratical notorieties to celebrate the cause. Both performers & crowd members dressed appropriately for the occasion, with Captain Anne Bowman & her Cockswain - Norman Jensen - setting the tone in their garish outfits.
Meg Dunn & Whore Island - a band of Smelly Pirate Hookers - set the tone with their sound-check/warm-up, as the venue slowly filled with enthusiastic punters.
Yours truly was the early feature performer, going under the name of Captain Thom. I was pretty nervous & my accent varied between a pirate drawl, Welsh Brogue, Scottish Lilt & Irish stammer during my rehearsal. But when I donned the wig, boot buckles, tricorn hat & quasi-Admiral's jacket I transformed into a drunken pirate captain fallen on hard times. Not to blow my own trumpet, but it was gratifying to have such a warm & receptive crowd, as the room filled with laughter after every "aarrgghh!"
Eddie Burger came on next. Something that must be said for Mr Burger is that he is a prolific writer/performer. At any given time he can be found rehearsing for a Gilbert & Sullivan show, published in nefarious journals, performing his unique brand of spoken word & working towards finishing his book of short stories. Ed was in his element as a pirate, singing ditties with gusto, & performing material written expressly for the show.
Whore Island are a phenomenon. Consisting of Meg Dunn on Vocals, Kris Terbutt on piccolo, mouthorgan & occasional vox, Stevie (AKA Johnny Depp's doppelganger) on Guitar, Andy Darling on Trumpet/Electric guitar, Bianca on Bass & Mishka on Tambourine & back-up vox, the many & varied instrument changes make this outfit a queer creature indeed. The poetic Lyrics of Meg (& later by Kris) are a kind of narrative, with loose piracy themes & a cool sounding meter.
"I only celebrate two anniversaries:
Bob Marley's birthday
& Elvis' death..."
The night was such a hit that the organisers immediately announced a special Halloween edition. Yours Truly got a guernsey, as does Whore Island, while the rest of the details will be confirmed soon.
