Ruddy Cheeks

July 29th 2009 14:44
Ruddy cheeks, swollen eyes
A tear rolls down my face-
Almost into my mouth
But I catch it first
With my fingers
Angry and forceful
Ashamed to be crying again, still
Wishing the pain would stop
Thinking too much and
Not caring enough
This is what depression brings

I too was expecting something about our leader. Hmmm, I think that indicates a need to change the title, or change your audience.

Thanks for the comment Peter. I didn't think about Kevin Rudd when I wrote it.

Carolyn- I wonder if you know that ruddy just means reddish (at least in the US), so no, I'm not going to change my title. Sorry you didn't like it.

Kristin, I assumed the tears must be very bitter, isn't it?

Oh no, I thought this was about Kevin Rudd too.

But I really like this:

Thinking too much and
Not caring enough

Ruddy. Exposed, raw, awkward, weather-beaten.

Rosey. Warm, glowing, gentle, natural.

Two kinds of reddish.

Kynaston- Definitely ruddy. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks, I was aware of ruddy meaning red, I have ruddy cheeks after a couple of glasses of wine, especially if I trip and go arse over like I did the other week, very embarrassed.

Anyway, for the poem - a personal and powerful piece, which spoke to me and I am sure to many others.

I still think though, the poem deserves a better title, irrespective of Australia's leader's surname. What about "bitter tears" instead.

Titles are very important for a poem, although a dear friend of mine doesn't give his poems titles, he says the poem should speak for itself and if it's a good poem it won't need the label of a title.

Carolyn- I think that's a good idea for a title. I recall that Dickinson didn't title most of her poems either, so as a default they are titled according to the first line of the poem. I just took the first two words. That's really all there was to it. I actually had no idea that Australia's leader is named Rudd. Ha! Oh, well.
Thanks for clarifying your earlier comment! I appreciate you visiting my site.
