2006 Overload Poetry Festival: in review
September 8th 2006 06:53
The Overload Poetry Festival is a celebration of Melbourne's vibrant spoken word culture. Since 2002, Overload has promoted the abundance of original, provocative & vibrant poetry in the greater Melbourne area. Overload is committed to Poets & Writers, with a focus on Melbourne's exciting contemporary arts culture, targeting the talent & diversity often hidden away in bars & cafés. Melbourne as a community pays homage to a wide variety of cultural activities & Overload represents the burgeoning underground of spoken word artists.
The two-week Overload Poetry Festival in August 2006 incorporated venues that support poetry on a regular basis & showcased an array of literary events. The program also featured venues that were organised especially for the festival. These venues incorporated events including book launches, performance workshops, spoken word competitions & performances from interstate poets.

Overload chooses its performers from amongst Victoria's finest practicing poets, bringing together the people of Melbourne's spoken word scene to celebrate in the poetry capital of Australia. Poets from every State & Territory have featured in past festivals, with this year being no exception. There were also a poetry troupe from Belfast & performers from Canada & New Zealand.
The festival was conceived in early 2002 as a forum for the marginalised artform of performance poetry. The program for the first festival was put together with the assistance of over thirty venue convenors, a multitude of excited poets & a faithful group of supporters. Overload is inclusive of all, reflecting the community values of Melbourne's cosmopolitan society. It does not discriminate on age (youngest performer is 14 & the oldest is 90), or gender, ethnicity, religion or any other type of cultural differences. It recognises the traditional owners of the land & celebrates the power of spoken word & languages to bring together people from all over the world.
Overloadnation egroup, with presently 400 subscribers, who receive, contribute & distribute information around the country has proven to be a valuable resource for communication within the Melbourne entertainment scene. It also reaches many people interstate & overseas, with results indicating that some of them have already or plan to travel to Victoria for the Overload Poetry Festival.

Overload Poetry Inc. is a non-profit organisation. The festival's program comprises a significant proportion of the existing calendar of events that support poetry in Melbourne & Victoria on a regular basis. Festival management co-ordinates with venue convenors to confirm venues, dates, budget requirements, technical requirements, marketing needs & performers. Throughout the year, Overload promotes & supports all poetry mediums, including poetry readings, writer's groups, book launches, student writers, plus many more diverse occasions. Holding an annual festival acts as a conduit for all the activities on the annual calendar, focusing the work of twelve months into one fortnight. In this way, the appeal of the events to a far broader audience than any single event or previous co-operative has done before. This said, the program is a culmination of years of effort by a number of impassioned people whose vision inspires people to become involved.
Well done Overload on yet another awesome festival!
