The Quote Generator
October 25th 2006 04:37
Language has failed us all at times. Some revert to art, or vows of silence, or writing poetry unbound by grammatic or punctuation conventions. But one Melbourne artist is taking an extreme stance on the often meaningless & mundane language that pervades our daily lives.
So, if you're walking through the streets of Melbourne any time soon & see a strange looking woman saddled with a dozen pockets on a jacket more resembling a filing system, take a chance & say hello.
Danielle Freakley is the Quote Generator. She only speaks in quotes, which may be anything from a Groucho Marx one-liner to a simple Fonzie "Eyyyy!" As a part of her PhD thesis, she will spend the next 3 years conversing with everyone in well-worn quotations in an attempt to create a new dialect/vernacular from the rich vein of English oral history.
She has set a number of limitations & exceptions to her self-imposed torture. For instance, her quote must be referenced & be from commercial products, including films, books, advertising jingles etc. She also enjoys the freedom of speaking her own mind when at home, at work, or doing mundane things such as talking on the phone.
The Quote Generator was launched on Monday the 23rd of October at the Gertrude St Gallery of Contemporary Art. A tidy crowd of Artists, poets, musos & various punters gathered to enjoy the refreshments & be entertained by Danielle in her first hours as the Quote Generator borg.
Anyone who is interested in contributing to the project can email Danielle
