Bastet Singer/Songwriters' Night
September 12th 2006 06:43
Last Wednesday, 6th September, saw the opening night of a new gig @ Dante's Fitzroy. Bastet (named after the Egyptian Goddess of Fertility - the one with the Cat's Head) is a night for emerging Singer/songwriters & is coordinated by the Muso in Residence, Honeytree.
Dante's is a Gertrude St icon. Filled to the brim with kitch adverts from yesteryear & a jungle-full of taxidermed animalia, the venue offers al fresco, bartables, a 50-seat restaurant, three function spaces & a sizeable art gallery.
Bastet is held upstairs in a groovy room, replete with reverse J-shaped bar & stylish decoration. Amidst a candle-lit setting, the supportive crowd of 30-odd punters (pretty good for opening night, not to mention a Wednesday) were treated to a few hours of original acoustic music by crazy Leigh Robertson & blues/folk musician Honeytree. Spoken Word Performer & self-styled Hysterical Realist, Kris Allison, provided a neat & humorous counterpoint to the musical stylings.
Honeytree is making her return as an acoustic gig-running impressario, after successfully running Angelic Acoustic @ Pure. That gig was a crowd-puller & featured many of the locale's talented solo musicians.
Overload Poetry Inc. is supporting Bastet, while promoting Poetry Gigs @ Dante's every other Wednesday of the month.
September 13th Overload Poetry Slam
September 20th Featuring Patrick McCauley, Michael Ward & Nick Powell
September 27th NMIT Greensborough students w/ Lindsay Belbin
October 4th Bastet w/ Honeytree & Michael Reynolds TBC
Bastet is held on the first Wednesday of the month @ Dante's Fitzroy, Corner of Gertrude & Napier Streets. 8pm start $3/$5 entry
